Yes, the Eagles know that they should have won Sunday's game against the Bengals.
But nothing can be done about it now.
Another test, another challenge awaits this Sunday when the Eagles travel to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to face the 6-4 Ravens, who are led by first-year head coach and former Reid assistant John Harbaugh.
Armed with an efficient rookie quarterback in Joe Flacco, who played his college ball at nearby Delaware, and the league's third-ranked rushing attack, the Ravens are in position to make a postseason run. They currently hold the sixth playoff spot in the AFC. And, of course, their defense is still anchored by linebacker Ray Lewis. And it remains one of the best in football as it is ranked third in the entire league.
But the Eagles still have something to play for, don't they? They still hold a winning record, after all. At 5-4-1, the Eagles are only a 1/2 game out of the final playoff spot in the NFC. With five of their last six games against teams with winning records, the Eagles will have the perfect opportunity to test whether they belong in the playoff conversation.
But it all starts on Sunday with Baltimore.
"We have that back-against-the-wall mentality," wide receiver Hank Baskett
said. "There's no room for error for the rest of the season. We can't look at the NFC East (games) coming up at the end. We have to look at the game next week, then the one after that."
Super Bowl champions have certainly overcome adversity in the past. Speaking of Baltimore, they started the 2000 season 5-4 before winning seven straight games to finish 12-4. The following year, the Patriots were 5-5 and they ended up with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Did you really think the Giants would win it all a year ago after a 41-17 loss to Minnesota in their 11th game of the season?
"We have a lot of football left," strong safety Quintin Mikell
said. "All we have to do is keep at the grind, hopefully things will turn around."
This is the time of the year when the Eagles usually play their best football. Since 2000, the Eagles are 48-21-1 in the months of November and December. Under head coach Andy Reid after the bye week, the Eagles are 59-26-1. And it's not like the Eagles have played bad football this season. They are ranked sixth in scoring offense and eighth in scoring defense. The only thing that matters is wins and losses. And the Eagles can get a win this Sunday against the Ravens.
The Eagles know that they must play better than they did last Sunday in order to win. In fact, players will tell you that any performance this week will be better than what you saw on the field against the Bengals.
"It has to be because we don't have anywhere else to go," wide receiver Jason Avant said. "We've played our worst game. We can only go up now."

I think all of you have this situation wrong. You think AR and McNabb are joined at the hip when in reality DM is still holding a grudge against AR for drafting Kolb instead of a wide receiver or a big back that year. All these slow starts and bad passes are to put pressure on the front office to either trade him or fire AR. He feels like AR stabbed him in the back and I don't blame him. If all AR wanted to do was groom a replacement for the years to come he didn't need to take a QB in the 2nd rd with his first pick of the year. If AR was fired and say Bill Cowher was hired I think DM would have a Banner year, no pun intended,.

The fact of the matter is that the team is one play from being 8-1-1. the play calling in the first half of the games is geared to lighting up the score board, and the 2nd half they get lax. the defense is on the field more in the 2nd half, except when they go 3 & out the 1st 5 possession of some games. They have terrible play calling all together. WE have the weapons to some degree. has anyone noticed how few looks DJackson gets now that Curtis is back. I sit and scream at my TV because we are better , far better than our record and the teams that we play. In every game we have had the lead in the fourth only to squander it to lax, and poor play calling. The other teams don't give up, because the game is played for 60 mins, not 45. Mcnabb needs to get the ball out of the dirt, move his legs and make plays however needed. Who cares if he is never the great pocket quarterack, only thing that matters is wins, losses, and Superbowl wins. They are not giving Westbrook the ball enough in the beginning of games, to establish him. so what happens when the passing doesn't work , they try to run and the teams are up on that game plan. I am all for a big brusing back coming in and I think that baskett can be that big receiver along with djackson and curtis in the slot.

the fact is that both Reid and McNabb have been in Philadelphia 2 years too long. Reid was an innovative coach back in the day, but the league caught up to him. His play calling has become painfully predictable, and the NFC is not a door-mat anymore. We should have been to the Superbowl at least 3 times and won at least one since 2000, but we always choke in big games. Which brings me to McNabb; he was a good QB when he could run, but ever since he started getting injured every year, he hasnt been nearly as effective as he needs to be in order to take a team to the playoffs. He did a lot of good things for the Eagles back in his prime, but the time has come for him to go to a team that has a good D and running game and all they need is an average QB (Vikings?) I wish them both the best of luck, but both Reid and McNabb should find employment elsewhere... BRING BACK SPAGNUOLO

First of all Eagles fan's are freakin crazy..I swear yall have to be bipolar or something. One minute yall love Andy Reid and Mcnabb then win things are going wrong yall wanna chase them out of town and blame it on them. HELLO football is a team sport and everybody has a piece in how the season has gone so far. It all comes down to execution thats it. We are talented as hell we just gotta dig deep inside ourselves and win some football games.

who do people FEEL THE NEED TO CAPITALIZE EVERYTHING? its annoying. its simple, we need reid for talent finding, and we need a new offensive coordinator. also, it wouldnt hurt to have mcnabb learn what finesse is.

if you look at his stats they are not that impressive over his career. he has only 1 year with a quarterback rating over 100 between 2000 and 2003 the defense was stout and allowed him to win as many games as he did. I think people give him to much credit for what the eagles did then and now he's getting the credit for how bad he is now. over the course of 10 years he has exactly 2 with a completion percentage over 60. he's not a great quarterback. and that's that he doesn't have great stats and he doesn't have a superbowl. he's not accurate and in the city he plays in he needs to show something. this is a passionate city about our sports teams. why do you think westbrook and dawkins get so much love besides being great? they show they love to play the game and you can tell they are giving it their all every play. mcnabb may be giving it all but you can't tell by his demeanor. I know athletes make a lot of money but with making all that money you are going to take a lot of criticism. he's a baby as well he wants the credit when the team does well but not when it's not doing well. also he needs to be the star of team noone else can take his spot light. T.O. helped him to his best season ever and then ran him out of town. T.O. coming back from a broken ankle came back and played great in the superbowl and you have mcnabb out of breath not being able to run the hurry up offense. along with plenty of games that he couldn't manage the clock at the end of halves and games and cost the eagles valuable points and wins.

terry if mcnabb didn't throw the int then the bengals wouldn't have had the ball so that he could score.

WARNING: I'm not going DEBATE or criticize for your opinions. (EVERYBODY HAS A BELIEF) so Don't think I am taking my words for harsh.
All of the Eagles especially pro athletes get payed a lot of money, even Asante Samuel. I wouldn't say Donovan doesn't care because HE DOES care about making plays and winning. Look at his serious expression after a lost at a post game conference. It is just his personality and other EAGLES demeanor such Brian Dawkins for his OUTSPOKEN Lifestyle. Football is a game, and of course EVERYBODY wants to WIN even MCNABB. FOOTBALL is what THEY do, BUT IT IS NOT WHO THEY ARE. After a game everybody has an attitude of moving on. EVERYBODY HAS A DIFFERENT DEMEANOR/SWAGGER. THATS LIFE. If it ONLY WAS his (MCNABB) fault then why the EAGLES Defense gave up a touchdown for T.J. Houshmandzadeh? It's a team game.

BlackElephant 11/18/08 7:49 pm ET |
Yah, i agree with terry... this isn't entirely mcnabb's fault. Sure, he does his boneheaded things and you wonder... WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON? Maybe he tries to do too much when all the pressure is heaped on him. I didn't see the game on sunday so i don't know if that was the case but cut the guy some slack. He'll be back into his old game and you all know it too. I feel this is the week that the whole teams regather themselves and come out like they did against the rams and heck, like they did against the cowboys until those last couple drives. I'm not too sure about the playoffs considering we are in last for the division, but we need to build some momentum for next year at the least.

floydzt726 11/18/08 7:34 pm ET |
terry westbrook would have had more catches in the game if mcnabb would have been more accurate he started with the first play of the game and went throughout. he missed westbrook a few times including one where westbrook would have had a huge gain and possibly set up a score. i know the receivers haven't helped him a lot but he also hasn't helped himself when he has open receivers or puts no touch on his passes and throws them as hard as he can for a 5-10 yard pass. it's not all mcnabbs fault but he is the quarterback and the one making 100 million dollars. and i guess that's why he doesn't care he's still getting paid a lot of money.

This is my first EAGLES' BLOG.
So excited :-) lol
To all my loyal Eagles fans, I know you all are very upset what is going on with Philly this year. I know, looking at the stats (6th offense and 7th defense in the league) this team does not look like the 5-4-1 team. I mean, this team should be (9-1, 8-2, 7-3 and who knows might be running Titans money for a battle of undefeated) for all I care for. Don't put all the blame on Donovam McNabb. You all wondering why McNabb is always laid back approach even when they lose because he is GLAD to be a quarterback and work at a JOB he TRULY LOVES. WIN OR LOSE, PRO ATHLETES STILL GET A PAYCHECK. Be careful what you say NOW, because you all may REGRET by shallow up your words later on the season. McNabb been through this so many times, 2003 Eagles went 0-2, and they won 9 games in a row. And look at what happened in 2006, they went 5-6 and seemed out of the playoffs after McNabb went down, but they STILL kept their heads up winning 5 more games to win the division because EVERYBODY STEPPED UP and PLAY TOGETHER!
The main reason why McNabb is struggling because the recievers are not helping him catching the ball. The Eagles are in the top FIVE in MOST DROPPED PASSES. I believe Andy Reid needs to have DeSean Jackson to be MORE ACTIVE in each offensive series so he can take the pressure off of McNabb and B.WEST. Donovan needs to be DONOVAN by being aware his surroundings. Shawn Andrews has been a big hole for the offense, there is no wonder why Westbrook struggling (other than his injuries). Westbrook needs to more patient in rushing plays and receiving. I don't think nobody ever look at this stat. On McNabb's 28/58 completions/attempts, out of those 28 completions, Westbrook only caught 3 PASSES! Westbrook is a back who can catch over 6 or even 10 or more catches to be involved in the offense.
The Eagles just need to calm down and take one game at a time. It's just like taking a test at school, you don't worry about your upcoming tests and worrying what averages you want to achieve. Your job is to take one TEST at a time, studying. Same thing here for the Eagles, forget the other NFC team records. Let the WINS and the determination of their play do the talking, and records will be taken care of. I wanted to jump off the band wagon, but I have a sense of belief that the EAGLES CAN COMEBACK to make their success to make the playoffs to be contenders for the VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY. I really believe the Eagles can be the DANGEROUS TEAM to play against starting on Sunday 11-23-08. Don't get it twisted, its going to be a NASTY DOG FIGHT UPCOMING GAMES, and thats why I love the EAGLES because they are conquerers and THEY WILL NEVER SURRENDER. In reality, we all have to go through trials and struggle periods to be successful!
To all my Loyal Eagles fans, you all can have an option stating the team might not have a successful season, but you can't say THEY DON'T HAVE HEART and DETERMINATION to OVERCOME OBSTACLES they are going to. Football is a team game, and NO MAN is not a EXACT blame for a win or lost
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES ARE A TEAM OF DESTINY THAT WILL NOT SURRENDER TO LET THE DREAM DIE!
"BELIEVE" IS THE STRONG WORD RIGHT NOW, EAGLES NATION! AND I AM SURE THEY WILL NOT LET THE DREAM SLIP AWAY THROUGH THEIR FINGERS!
E-A-G-L-E-S!
GOD BLESS!

when asked about running against the 25th ranked run defense reid responds well they also have a weakness against the pass so thats what we wanted to do. but when you are passin 95% of the time they are gameplanning for the pass. if we had suprised them and ran 75% of the time they wouldve collapsed thus giving us a blowout victory. the playcalling needs to change along wit the playbook period. the rest of the year we should b concentrated on playing more physical and not being predictable and playing wit more emotion. combine those 3 things and we WILL make the playoffs, if not we will b looking forward to next year

I AM SO FRUSTRATED THIS YEAR! MCNABB DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT OT? FACING THE 25TH RANKED RUSH DEFENSE, WE THROW 58 TIMES AND RUN 16?? I THINK THE EAGLES LOST TWO GAMES EARLIER IN THE YEAR BECAUSE OF PLAY CALLING. WHEN THE EAGLES ARE DOWN LATE, I DON'T HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT MCNABB HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN THE GAME.

Everyone just needs to stop talking about the Eagles. Management obviously doesn't care. The players are probably doing the best the can with who they have. Just find something else to do or some other team that's worth watching on Sundays!!!

run game---westbrook had a career year last and u let his lead blocker thomas tapeh leave via free agency. u bring in a fullback that is about as fat and slow as andy reid and has about the same ability as reid when it comes to figuring out who to block!!
donovan mcnabb- forget about being a pocket passer! u need to be the dual threat u were when u came into the league. it looks like mcnabb tries not to run. i remember the mcnabb that was better on the run when he would adlive a play and give his sorry a** receivers sum more time to get open! lord knows they need it!!
receivers- put curtis lil midget a** in the slot. he is nowhere near physical enough to play on the outside! he isnt fooling anybody(expect andy and few dumb fans that cant see that 800 of his 1100 yards came in zone coverage) this guy is a number 3 or 4 receiver playing as a number 1. as i have been preaching before, Put hank baskett as our number 1. he is physical and matchup nightmare. just boldin n fitzgerald, n plaxico n t.o, calvin johnson, n roddy white!!! u kno, the pro bowl prototype. let desean play either outside in 3wr formations and the slot in 4wr formations. and for heavens sake please dont throw another bubble screen to reggie brown!! i want this clown ran out of philly in a ford focus!! this guy just like curtis doesnt scare anyone!!
coaching-- get rid of andy reid tonight. he cant raise his kids or coach a football team. ur kids r dopeboys and ur team tied the bengals!!! r u serious!!!! get his a** out of here!!!
play callin-- see coaching
defense-- jim johnson u r doing a great job. u have the personel to get it done and u are doin it. i would have liked to see joe mays against brandon jacobs but we will talk about that later.
playoffs-- have faith bird fans!! look at it like this. we only have four loses!! lets beat the ravens and then we can worry about our other three divisional games!!

Who could blame mc nabb for throwing interceptions with fans that dont support him.I would laught too.OH Yeah what wide receivers do our eagles have .which one of them went to the pro bowl sence T.O.Thats what I thought we have NONE.Get off of Mc Nabb.I bet U if you put in kevin kolb all of you will be crying.

floydzt726 11/18/08 5:14 pm ET |
mcnabb is not the best player on the team. the play calling has been terrible but he has made a lot of terrible throws. he has had open receivers and just missed them. he needs to get the ball out on better timing. this is the nfl you can't wait for the receivers to be open by a huge margin. in this west coast offense you need to take your 3 step drop and throw the ball where the receiver should be. if there was better timing there would be more consistency. but mcnabb is not accurate enough and never has been to throw the ball where it needs to be. mcnabb has a lot of talent but is being wasted in this offense. for this offense that reid runs we need another quarterback or if we want to keep mcnabb we need a new offense.
|
floydzt726 11/18/08 5:03 pm ET |
the problem with the run game is they don't run enough you look at the top running teams in the league, they have plays where they only get 1,2, or 3 yards but they continue to run. come the 3rd and 4th quarter they start wearing down the d and what was a 3 yard gain in the 1st quarter is a broken tackle and a 7-8 yard gain later on. if you only run the ball once a drive it doesn't do anything to the defense. constantly running the ball really wears on the defense, guys in the nfl especially linebackers and dbs can run all day long and be fine, when they take a pounding from being blocked and having to come up and make tackles it wears on them. especially the dline when the oline can come out and attack them not just sit back every play and wait for the dline to come to them. running is a mindset it's an attitude. you look at the best teams in the league right now and they run the ball alot. look at the titans 10-0 and the giants9-1, carolina panthers who are 8-2 the jets 7-3this year how many games has thomas jones had 30 carries? All those teams run the ball and they run a lot and they stick with it through the whole game not just a run here and there. oh and i didn't even mention the other two teams in our division cowgirls and skins. run run run is the way to go. control the clock beat up the defense and keep your own defense fresh and ready to attack.

applause to revta.... he hit it on the head this thing goes through mcnabb but he has to have a coordinator that will allow him to do what he and we all knows he can....we need a new young innovative play caller...another jason garret...i hate the cowboys so i hate that comparison but thats they type of play caller we need ...he uses all the weapons at his disposal
|
mcnabbwest@... 11/18/08 4:42 pm ET |
we have to put out WR to the test. We have to find their weakness and attack it fast. Each wideout has something special. We have to use that special thing, to win games. Mcnabb needs to throw the ball to Hank Basket more. people don't see that. If they don't now they'll never do. What happened to that other tighend we got from Kancity. Wilson. i haven't seen him play yet. We have to go deep when its one on one coverage and if not go towards the middle. The problem I see is that the wideouts need to practice on their back throws. They have to get practice catching the ball when tyheir backs are turned. We also nedd to practice going back for the football even though its missed we have to dive for it.
|
revtabrown@... 11/18/08 4:37 pm ET |
The problems with the Eagles is basic. Control the line of scrimmage mix buck and westbrook together, which will take the pressure off of McNabb and help him relax, and we all know that Mcnabb plays best when he is relaxed and just having fun like kids in the sandlot, and Andy hasn't been doing that for Dmac this year. In my mind we can still make a run if Andy would use all his weapons. I still feel if we are going to do it Dmac has to be the one running the show.

excuse the misspelling on my other post but ....you dont hear these kinds of critical comments to other top tier qb and they dont throw them under the bus either but contrary to some belief the man is the best player on the team sorry b west but theres nothing without mcnabb....watch and see how it will be once he leaves.... its the offensive coordinator whoever that is reid or moninweg thats killing us....too conservative and no imagination....
