Westbrook Among 4 Ruled Out For Game

Brian Westbrook may be his own worst enemy.

Despite having two fractured ribs, Westbrook lobbied to play this weekend against the 49ers.

But head coach Andy Reid decided against that. In fact, Reid said following Friday's practice that Westbrook, along with guard Shawn Andrews, wide receiver Reggie Brown and safety J.R. Reed will not make the trip to San Francisco.

"Brian wants to go," Reid said. "He's in the mindset that he wants to play, but it's a decision that I've got to make. I've got to do what I think is best for him and the football team down the road. It made the decision a little easier for me than it is for him. Obviously, he wants to contribute and compete. He's a tough nut and I know that."

Bottom line: Entering a pivotal contest before the bye week, the offense will be without its All-Pro running back, All-Pro guard and one of its two starting receivers.

Kevin Curtis
WR Kevin Curtis

On a positive note, though, receiver Kevin Curtis practiced the last couple days with the first-team offense and could see his first action of the season Sunday against the 49ers. Curtis participated fully in practice this week and is listed as questionable on the team's injury report.

"We are just gradually bringing him back in," Reid said. "He is prepared to play."

With Curtis' status uncertain and Brown out, one of the team's other receivers will have to step up once again.

"It's definitely a big game for us right now to figure out what's going on," said wide receiver Hank Baskett. "It's bad. We're back to the position we were at the start of the year with Reggie down. At least Kevin is fortunately coming back. Reggie will hopefully have time to get well.

"We have to just come out here and perform. That's what it is. That's why those guys are starters and we're their backups, in case something happens. Injuries happen all the time in this league, so now the pressure is on us. DeSean (Jackson) and I, Greg (Lewis) and Jason (Avant) know we have to step up and make something happen, especially with Westbrook being out, too."

As always, Reid is confident the players will fill in and do a good job.

"We have other guys who have to step up and play," Reid said. "That's what we expect to happen. It is a very important game; they all are. I've said this in the past, if somebody gets hurt, that next guy needs to crank it up, along with everybody else around him."

The fact that Reid made it clear who is and is not going to play on Sunday should make it easier on the players stepping in for the injured.

"They're the ones who practice, and now they can get themselves ready to go," Reid said. "They might have expected it, but now they know it. It's cut and dry. Brian doesn't need to travel, and Reggie doesn't need to travel. In particular, Brian, with the pain that he's in. We'll relieve him of any motion there and it allows 'Buck' (RB Correll Buckhalter) to get himself mentally prepared."

As for Westbrook's long-term health, Reid said the time off-- Sunday followed by the bye week--should allow for his playmaking back to return to the lineup Oct. 26 against the Falcons.

"If he were to get hit on it this week, it would slow down the process of healing," Reid said. "I think the bye week will help him. I think it will take some of the sting out of that thing. It buys him some time so, when we get back, the ankle and ribs are ready to go. It will be smooth sailing here."

Meanwhile, defensive end Juqua Parker, who leads the team with 3.5 sacks, did not practice this week but will "most likely" play, according to Reid.

Also, second-year defensive end Victor Abiamiri practiced fully this week and is expected to make his 2008 season debut on Sunday.

"He has done a nice job," Reid said. "He hasn't played in a game for a while, so he needs that. He needs to get incorporated in there gradually and he will be fine."

Finally, Reid had no new update on Andrews and his back injury.

1318, please don't post anything again... ever! You are an embarrassment to Eagles fans everywhere you illiterate moron! That was the most ridiculous rant I've ever read. Finish night school, get your GED, and maybe you can come back and make some sense with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Mcnabb is having and will continue to have a very good season. When he scrambles, he's exceptional. I think he needs to realize this. For some reason I think Mcnabb believes he will be thought of as less of a quarterback if he's know for his scrambling ability and not his pocket passing ability. We know Mcnabb has a great arm but, what makes him and even better quarterback is his ability to run effectively. He needs to be reminded of this and scramble more often when the Eagles have a third and 2. Also, the problem with the offence is not any player on the team but seems to be the offencive play selection as of late. Two weeks in a row we should have come out with a victory but, because of very poor play selections a best, we've come away with two crucial losses. Fire the offencive co-ordinator and get someone in there that get the job done. All the weapond are there. The D is great!

My main point about mcnabb is this. I believe when its all said in done and we are looking back on his career he will be best remembered for making playes with his feet. Like the 15 second play on monday night football. Now we are stuck with a mcnabb that thinks he is a pocket passer and that has never been his identity. Only time will tell but i dont believe that this mcnabb can win a superbowl anymore and i would personaly like to see the team move on sooner rather than later. Im not talking about pulling him this season he has earned our loyalty for another year maybe 2 depending on what happens this season but i am sick of watching him throw balls into the ground and laughging about it.

I have and you can count that at least 2-3 plays a game Mcnabb will throw a ball in the dirt on a critical play and then smile about it and point at him self and say "thats me thats me" and walk to the sideline with his doofy smile im sick of it.

McNabb is always putting ball in the grass when he stays in ths pocket but when he runs he put the ball in the perfect spot. I dont get it, maybe he is just old and doesnt want to run. He would rather just put it in the dirt and than walk to the sideline and save himself for retirement

I think the Eagles have a real good shot of winning this one even without Bwest. Correll has looked good this year but I'm really wanting to see the Big Kid back in action. Although there is blame enough to go around, I think the real problem is the play-calling. I wouldn't want to be out there trying to execute a play that I didn't believe in 100%. I think they'll need to go long and stretch the field and open up the running game. I'd love to see DeSean and Baskett pull in some long ones.

McNabb is the reason i started watching the eagles so im not a mcnabb hater. But how many passes bounce in to open recievers or go over there head. Mcnabb was at his best when he was out of the pocket. He was never really a pocket passer he has allways struggled with accuracy. Now he seems to be one dimentional he no longer scrambles and when he does he seams slow. This is not the mcnabb i loved to watch and until he steps up and shows me somthing im personaly get a little sick of him 2.

Eaglefan, if your such a Mcnabb hater, go find another team to root for then. Every QB has their bad throws, but he has alot of dropped balls unf and against the skins their were a couple big drops. Birdcrazy, if we had Andrews in there, we punch it in both times in both games and are 4-1, minus a fumble in Dallas we could be 5-0.. unf not the case, hopefully the birds will just start kicking a** from here and Mcnabb will get the yards needed to move the sticks!!!... Go Eagles !!!!

it all comes to this..even through all these injuries to westbrook and brown..if we cant beat the 49ers without them we cant call ourselves a good team..we have to prove to the rest of the leugue that westbrook is not our only weapon..n for some reson im having a felling we are going to blow out da 49ers..with all the statements form mcnabb that he is embarrased i think him and the team have something to prove and it starts on sunday..GO EAGLES!!!!!
