Road To Recovery

Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbook was limited in practice for a second straight day and continues to make progress, according to head coach Andy Reid.

"He looked real good out there today," Reid said following practice. "We're throwing him in there a little bit more each day. He did a little more today than yesterday, and we'll give him a little bit more tomorrow. We're just being smart with it and adding something every day."

Westbrook sat out last week's game with an ankle strain and the team is holding out hope that its play-making, all-purpose back will be in the lineup Sunday against NFC East rival Washington, a team Westbrook has had a good amount of success against of late. In his last four games against the Redskins Westbrook has racked up 621 scrimmage yards (155.3 per game), including 397 rushing yards (99.3 per game) and 19 catches for 224 yards.

"He's moving around out there, and it's been real positive," Reid said. "He's making progress. Every day has been a good step forward."

In other injury-related news, quarterback Donovan McNabb (chest) and cornerback Asante Samuel (chest) were full-go in Thursday's practice after being limited in Wednesday's workout. Tight end L.J. Smith (back) appears on track to play Sunday as he participated fully for a second straight day. Smith's return would certainly help bolster the Eagles' red-zone offense.

Also, second-year defensive end Victor Abiamiri practiced Thursday for the first time since training camp. Abiamiri, who has been sidelined with a wrist injury he sustained during workouts at Lehigh University, was limited in practice.

CURTIS' RECOVERY CONTINUES

Wide receiver Kevin Curtis is eager to get back on the field, but for now he remains limited to scout team duty. Curtis underwent surgery for a sports hernia back in late August and has practiced on a limited basis the last two weeks.

Curtis' desire to return is balanced by caution as he does not want to experience a setback.

"I haven't gone 100 percent and ran full speed and cut off of it yet because I can tell it's not quite ready for that," said Curtis. "It's a whole different game running out there on grass ... running on it full speed, cutting and planting. It's just I'm not quite ready to fully cut it loose."

Without Curtis in the lineup, the offense has still managed to get good production from its receivers, including second-round pick DeSean Jackson, who leads NFL rookies with 327 yards (22 catches, 14.9-yd avg.).

There's no timetable on Curtis' 2008 debut. Of course, trainers and coaches will continue to monitor his progress and determine when he's able to take reps with the first-team unit in practice. For now, he says he's taking things one day at a time.

"I'm chomping at the bit, anxious to get out there," Curtis said. "But I want to make sure I don't do anything to set myself back further. I'm just making sure I'm feeling good before I get out there in a game situation."

Known for his speed, Curtis made an immediate impact in 2007, his first year in Philadelphia. Curtis caught a career-high 77 passes for 1,110 yards last season. In the process, he became just the second Eagles' wide receiver to tally more than 1,000 yards in a single season since head coach Andy Reid took over in 1999.

REDSKINS: WASHINGTON MISSES PRACTICES

Washington starting strongside linebacker Marcus Washington (hamstring) sat out Thursday's practice after being limited in Wednesday's workout.

Cornerback Shawn Springs missed practice for a second straight day. Springs missed the second half of last week's game against Dallas because of a calf injury. Redskins head coach Jim Zorn told the Washington media on Monday that the injury was not deemed to be serious.

Defensive end Jason Taylor will likely miss a second game after undergoing surgery on his calf. He has yet to practice this week. Defensive end Andre Carter missed practice for a second straight day, but his absence is not injury related, according to the team.

On offense, starting right tackle Stephon Heyer has yet to practice this week and will likely be replaced in the lineup by veteran tackle Jon Jansen. Heyer was relegated to special teams blocking duty last week against Dallas because of a shoulder injury and even in the limited role he tweaked the shoulder again. Jansen started the game in Dallas, his first start since the beginning of the 2007 season.

Also on the offensive line, starting right guard Randy Thomas (toe) was limited for a second straight day.

i said not to force it last week, and i'll say it again this week, don't force it. we lost due to lack of execution last week not lack of westbrook. it'd b nice to see him in uniform though even if it's just for show.

Why do other NFC East fans live in the past so much?...Oh noes we never won a Super Bowl...oh noes we are at bottom of NFC East after 4 weeks...Giants won the Super Bowl last year with luck...and your other wins against the Bills? Wasn't one of them with 5 field goals? Keep talking smack early in the year and post 70 times..2 signs of a intelligent sports fan.

ur right our D is scary, but Portis brings a different challenge. He has speed, power and he is as agile as the Steelers Willie Parker. the last game we played against the skins we held him in check on the ground , but he caught a few for decent yards. I hope our LB's are ready to play him in space. then there's Betts. with him they try to push the ball straight up the gut. in my mind this is the toughest RB combo we have seen so far. for my fellow eagles fans who were calling for the FO to look at getting Shaun Alexander, there is a reason he is sitting at home right now.

I agree DJ needs to quit dropping balls. It is uncalled for. I mean he is a rookie. Lets go. LOL You people that complain about DJ get a life. My God he is a rookie he is going to make mistakes. He has done great job for us and he has a bright future. Im a die Hard EAGLE fan and yes it does suck that they lost last week but every1 needs to relax. We have a good football team. Westbrook will be back. Curtis will come back soon. The offense will be fine. The only complaint i have is that we need a good TE. The ones we have just arent that good and that is the main problem in our goal line offense. LJ just isnt that good. Go EAGLES BEAT THEM SKINS.

dwesson10 is right. the biggest concern this sunday is getting Bwest and S.Andrews in the field. Obviously Lorenzo Booker can't handle the load yet but he'll get there. We need our running game against Washington to get the pressure off D-Mac. oh and De.Jackson better not drop anymore balls. I know the kid got game but he needs to stick w/ the BASICS which is HOLDING ON TO THE BALL!!!! to our "D", we have 1 scary Defense!!!! Finally we're stopping the run! We have to stop #26 this game though!

the biggest concern for us should be if The Big Kid plays. he is the foundation of the oline. we need him in there. MJG is doing fine, but Andrews plays at a different level.

cmon guys, the fact that AR put BWest in the practice rotation at all tells u that he is closer to playing than not playing. do you honestly think AR would risk his true franchise player. BWest probably will play Sunday, but i don't think he will get the majority of the reps. look for him to be split out more with Buck taking the most of the carries unless he is 100%.

That article says the last time byron talked to his Brian was sunday... obviously since brian didn't play that day it was still a problem at that point. Hopefully it is the case that when they talked on sunday Brian felt unsure... but he has gotten better as this week went on. And I agree with everyone else that says if he isn't almost fully recovered, sit him!

hey john actually i dont think he will dress for the skins if he does dress it will be only to throw off the 49ers game plan, then with all that i think he will play the first game after our bye week.

I am going to say it. As Westbrook goes so goes the offense. If B-West is on the field then the offense on. I hope the Eagles offense proves me wrong this weekend. Mark http://myteamrivals.typepad.com/eaglesnest/

I believe that Byron's message is just wishful thinking that his big bro wont play just check this out http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80b4e89d NFL.com video Wether or not he plays i think we can beat the skins...as long as our D brings there A game like they have been we should do alright...it might be close but we will pull off a W. We need some help from our secondary though...we have been stopping the run really well but for some reason we have been letting up some big passing plays, with the guys we have that shouldnt be happening.

I'm still not worried about it. Sit B West until his 100%. We need him for the second half of the season... I can turn into a positive for our team to play without him.. Then once he comes back we won't rely on him for 75% of the offense. I'm truly hoping anyway...

I heard that about B West's bro... Here's the link to the article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/01/AR2008100102972.html I think if he's practicing, then he'll at least dress, and have a go at it...

Did anyone hear about the rumor going around that Westbrooks brother told some Redskins fans that his injury was alot worse than the Eagles are saying? That its more than a sprained ankel. If so, whats the deal with that?

Good to see Westbrook back out practicing, were going to need him because he ads a dynamic part of our offense that has been lacking.
