Camp Countdown: Running Back

By: JOE DOLAN

In 2007, there were 2,104 reasons to love Brian Westbrook.

His 1,333 rushing yards and 771 receiving yards were good enough to vault him to the top of the NFL in yards from scrimmage, further fueling his growing reputation as the league's No. 1 playmaker.

But there could also be 2,104 alarms blaring.

NFL running backs have notoriously short shelf-lives - burning out is far more common than slowly fading away. Each yard takes its toll playing one of the most grueling positions in athletics, which endures at least 20 knocks a game from players who outweigh the backs by up to 100 pounds.

While Westbrook's load in past seasons – he's entering his seventh - hasn't been nearly that of former MVPs Shaun Alexander and Marshall Faulk, whose stats plummeted as the bruises multiplied in the twilights of their careers, the Eagles don't want to take their chances.

Enter Lorenzo Booker, whom the Eagles acquired from Miami for a fourth-round pick in April's NFL Draft.

Much more a doppelganger than the complementary hit-absorbing big back players like Westbrook traditionally have as a cushion, Booker has a knack for the pass-catching and shiftiness that make Westbrook such a threat, and the second-year back has a fresher set of legs.

Booker saw quite a few reps in the spring workouts, and he's mirroring Westbrook – lining up as a lone setback, tailing a fullback or running routes from the slot. The idea seems to be allowing Westbrook to get a little extra rest while not drastically changing the gameplan for head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

"We're just trying to get more speed on the field. Give the defense a lot of different things they have to cover, a lot of different things they have to worry about," Westbrook said. "Lorenzo brings a big-play capability as well to the field. He's very fast, very shifty, has very good hands. We're just trying to put more playmakers on the field at the same time."

Not only does Booker provide an adequate substitution for Westbrook, he could create a calamity for linebackers. Overthinking on the defensive side of the ball is a possibility, with having to worry about both Westbrook and Booker running patterns into the flats or across the middle. As is often the case with the West Coast offense, deception is the key.

And, speaking of deception, what exactly do the Eagles plan to do with all these backs? Veteran Correll Buckhalter, who continues to defy odds as a productive threat after three season-ending knee injuries, returns. Though devastating, the injuries haven't affected Buckhalter's eyes, as his vision and ability to find holes between the tackles are valuable assets to an effective running game.

Thumper Tony Hunt could see an increased role in his second-year in the system. The third-round pick from 2007 carried the ball only 10 times last season, a disappointing total for a supposedly nice complement to Westbrook. But the West Coast system is traditionally tough to pick up on, as former star Duce Staley garnered just seven carries in his rookie season behind vets Ricky Watters and Charlie Garner. Even Westbrook saw limited playing time his rookie season.

Ryan Moats is back in action after an ankle injury ended his 2007 season during the preseason, and is out to prove that he still belongs in a crowded backfield.

But there's no doubt who the star of the show is, and keeping him on the field is the M.O.

"I'm a fan of carrying the ball, and having the ball in my hands, but I also want the best for this team. I know sometimes it's better to spread the ball, allow them to get the ball into different people's hands so that we can present problems for a defense," Westbrook said. "I love having the ball in my hands. I think I'm a better player when I have the ball in my hands."

JUST A YEAR AGO ...

Westbrook's 2007 numbers need no explanation – they speak for themselves.

But underrated were Buckhalter's 313 yards, including a 103-yard performance in Westbrook's stead against the Giants – his most in a game since 2003.

Hunt might get a pass as a second-year player in the system, but he must show considerable improvement over his 18-yard total.

BATTLE TO WATCH: How many backs are going to make the team, and who are they going to be?

Westbrook and Booker seem like locks, but it might be wide open past that. Pass protection and special teams might be a noteworthy area to watch, as the Eagles like to get the most out of their reserves. The Eagles had three running backs on the opening day roster last season.

Reid has shown he has no qualms about cutting underperformers in the past, and with five backs heading into training camp, there will be no exception in 2008.

Hey Nuuuudlz please read the post on the Randall Cunningham article. And maybe you will understand how to use 20/20 hindsight. I do agree with you one one thing, the use of calling each other the "the gateKeeper", "the sage", or "the seer" is something out of WWE....it is just downright goofy.

special teams is not a concern. Desean was never the front runner on kof, only punt return. Demps will probably get his share of both, since Booker and later on Jackson will be crucial pieces of the offense.

Brize - hey, no offense taken. I dont think I could get down with tha gatekeeper anyhow, ya know? Too high profile for me. Tampa Bay time in 09! Hold the salt, pass the butta, eagles return as the NFC East front runna!

nowhere in that scenario do we desperately need a "true #1 reciever." Would I like Boldin as an eagle? Sure, more firepower is always good. Your assuming that the eagles havent made a wignificant offer for him and all the other big ballers out there. It aint gonna happen, so we look to the draft and hope Desean catches a couple big ones against weaker defenses. Or we try again next year. As for #5 - I love the guy, I really do, but you are making him sound like a victim. Would he be out there taking a beating with a big, goofy grin, if he didnt want the team on his shoulders? When T.O. hung him out to dry, he was all jokes and composure as soon as the suspension was decreed. Donny doesnt need a "#1 reciever." Would he like one? Probably. But whats to say he doesnt like Booker and Jackson and Celek? Spose Brown actually shows up in Arizona this year? Donny will probably love that. And I am very certain that reciever is not the primary need for a superbowl team. Why? Because the eagles have had great Quarterback-reciever matchups before and still dont have a superbowl! Randall to Calvin and Barnett and Fryar clearly was not enough, my slow friends! Like several others on this chatboard, I am much more concered with the depth of our line.

eagles4ever . . . did I personally call you out? If I did . . . whoops. If not, you need to tuck in mangina. I'm not gonna dance to avoid stepping on it. As to the absolute need for a #1 reciever, I will talk football, pure and simple. Not just to you, but to anyone and everyone, so stop crying and focus for a second. Double coverage will be used against both Westy and Booker. Why? Because Booker plays Westy football and Westy draws the double coverage. With me so far? Thats already 2 linebackers (see the mismatch?) and 1 or 2 safeties. Westy + Booker on the field together a whole lot = big mismatch. Against a 4-3 defense, that leaves only one linebacker to line up against the tight-end or rush for the blitz. L.J. isnt the best tight end in the league or even the division, granted, but he will draw coverage. That leaves us with either 2 recievers or 2 tight ends. Brent Celek isnt the fastest guy, but he has good hands and he throws his weight around, so in a 2 or 3 tight end set he becomes a legitimate threat over the middle. Kris Wilson or Schoebel are both smooth route runners and fast enough to get by a linebacker or safety. I'd prefer Kris because he is so physical. As for recievers . . . let Curtis do a slant or maybe a cross and let Brown hit a go route, which is really what he excels at (the deep ball can look real pretty when he catches it). With me so far?

FYI Schiller ...I'm a long time reader of the posts, but that was my first time posting. The only reason I posted the question was to settle a side bet with my buddy about the possibility of getting Boldin. I don't think we NEED him, but I think it's safe to say that every Eagles fan would love getting him ...including yourself. Ecspecially since we don't use our 1st round draft picks anywmore. And since JB99 said there's an outside chance of our 1st rounders luring him away from 'zona ...I won the side bet. Thanks JB99.

JB- Of course you're correct there. But the bottom line (and I know you know this) is that even though there are theoretically way to pry Boldin out of Zona, there's not an owner or GM in the NFL that would make such a deal because it would just take too much for it to be fair price for just 1 player. Not even Daniel Snyder or Al Davis. SunnyD and some others- you gotta realize this. And yes, I shouldn't let it keep me up this late. Watched Fight Club tonight after finishing the book earlier today. Not a great movie to watch if you're prone to insomnia..... Book is better IMO. Goodnight- hopefully.

I'll bet you could get Bolden for 4 1st rounders. That would be tough to pass up.

atv))) That respect doesn't come without its pitfalls. For instance... everyday for bout 2 weeks people would post somethin to EAGLES.com guys tryin to get me kicked off. Er somethin... what was it Bri? Anyways people would tell me how much they hated me and that I needed to shut up. === I just FU'd'em and let it work itself out. Which it did. === But now that I read your 8 post... yeah... we said the same thing. === It was my slight of hand posting... I slip in a contract situation and a possible '09 RB draft and it takes the attention off my post. And it makes it seem like I know somethin.

Orange juice- The answer to your question is simple. There are 3 distinct and equally feasible possibilities. 1: a #1 and Clark Kent 2: a #1 and Ghandi 3: a #1 and Mr. GIVEITUPTHEY'RE NOT LETTING BOLDIN GO FOR ALL THE MONEY AND TALENT IN THE WORLD

At least 2 1st rounders... for Bolden. More than that I'd guess. === 2 1st rounders and Lito maybe?

Wow... I get the #8 post, get greif over my 3 Rb theory, and when I return I'm the 140th post. Then as I scroll through the posts, I see where JB basically agrees with my post from 8 hours earlier and no one dare question him??? Guess I need to be more active to earn that kind of respect! But such is life, with a demanding 9 month old little girl for who's attention I gladly give up my precious blogging time about the birdz... I am also very happy and proud to say my little girl will be making her first trip to the land of Midnight Green to see the place where here dada grew up in south philly marchin wit da mumers and playin stick ball in the bank parking lot. Too bad she doesn't have any teeth yet, cause she's gonna miss out on some Tony Luc's chicken parm w/ hots... Jim's Steaks... Tasty Pies, and Peanut Butter Kandy Cakes. She will however, be getting her first glimpse of the Linc, although I'm kinda sad she won't get to see the place where all her dad's first Birdz memories were formed... the late, great, Vet. Sure it was a rat infested, knee waiting to be blown out, jail in the cellar, dump... but it was also home to the Birdz beating the cowgirls to go to the superbowl, Irvin's premature retirement, and where the Phils won their only world series, and many more fond memories. Get ready Philly... we have a brand new fan on her way for you to groom into one of your minions!

ganger- If you can't get it at your local place (some distributors only get cases and they mostly make it in large, single bottles) - "The Foodery" on the corner of 10th and Pine will have it- and for that matter, everything else beer. It's worth a trip downtown. Anchor is the brewery.

No more BrizerBock? Why'd you give up? Yeah- Anchor-christmass is a great brew. Have you tried the Samuel Smith Christmassy one - "Winter Welcome"- same category, also top quality. The Harpoon Winter Warmer is OK in my book, and loved by many but last years batch was WAY to spiced- cinnamon and nutmeg have to be used very very gently with beer!

gangrene,..i've brewed my own...not anymore. The beer in question might still be around,..it keeps well generally,.usually is ok for a year or so if stored in dark and cool. Just make sure it's the special christmas brew not regular anchor steam, or stout, etc. The seasonal usually becomes available in Nov. It's not cheap.

McNibbityMVP, Going to a game is a great experience and I hope one day I can go again. After 9/11 I was assigned to the 5th Special Forces out of Fort Campbell KY. The season opener for the Titans in 02 was against the Eagles in TN. My unit was asked to extend the flag over the field as Jets flew over head. Our seats that game were folding chairs right behind the Eagles sidelines. Having gone to Pennsbury High School I knew Troy Vincent who was not dressed due to a Hamstring pull. He introduced me to #5 and #20. It didn't matter the Eddie George converted a 2 pt conversion that day to beat the Eagles. Next to my child being born, that was the best day of my life.
