From Reid's View: So Far, So Good

Andy Reid seemed as pleased as a head coach could be Monday after the close of the Eagles' post-draft mini-camp.

"I thought the players did a nice job," he said. "They hung together and they worked hard and had a great attitude."

As a result of the team's overall positive approach, Reid said the first phase of bonding took place between new and old players and some valuable chemistry was created.

"Now, we have a long way to go and a lot of work ahead of us," he said. "I am confident that the guys will maintain the attitude and work ethic that they showed during this training camp."

Reid was even pleased with the progress that was shown in the offense's performance in the red zone drills. The NFL red zone conversion average was 52.3 percent last season. The Eagles converted 45.1 percent of their attempts - a 10 percent decrease from their 55.3 percent succession rate between the 2000-2006 seasons.

Coming into last season quarterback Donovan McNabb and tight end L.J. Smith were both dealing with injuries and some think that's what caused the Eagles to struggle inside the 20. Reid described that there is more to the issue than just those two players.

"I think we'll get back to where we were," Reid said. "We're saying that it's all skill guys; that's not necessarily the whole picture. It takes the whole team mixed in there, starting with me and making sure we have the right plays in there, and the offensive line. You don't exclude those two factors. I think they're very important."

Reid echoed a point McNabb made on Saturday saying, "The people that we have, we should be able to get back to where we were, production wise, in the years before."

The Eagles' first preseason game is three months and three days away and even then, coaches will still be in the process of evaluating every aspect of the team. But the message of this camp was made clear: so far so good.
