Mistakes Costly For Birds

Miscues and missed opportunities haunted the Eagles dearly in Sunday's 28-24 loss to Seattle.

It started on the first play from scrimmage as Seattle linebacker Lofa Tatupu intercepted A.J. Feeley's pass and returned it to the Eagles' 18-yard line. The Eagles had a chance to return the favor when Omar Gaither got a hand on Matt Hasselbeck's first down pass, but linebacker Takeo Spikes failed to come up with a sure interception which he could have potentially returned for a touchdown.

Instead, Seattle cashed in three plays later with Shaun Alexander's 2-yard touchdown run.

Like last week at New England, Feeley and Co. responded with a touchdown drive to even the score.

But on Philadelphia's next offensive series, Feeley was intercepted by Tatupu again. This time Tatupu returned the ball to Philadelphia's 8-yard line. Three plays later, Matt Hasselbeck hooked up with Bobby Engram for 12 yards and a touchdown.

"When the ball's in my hands, I've got to do a good job of directing it in the right spot," Feeley said. "It's my job to see everything and protect the football."

Despite the errors, Philadelphia trailed 21-17 late in the first half and appeared to be in position to take the lead. After Kelly Jennings was flagged for defensive pass interference in the end zone, the Eagles had the ball first-and-goal at the 1-yard line with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter. But the Eagles came away empty. A pair of runs by Westbrook were stuffed and a Feeley pass fell incomplete. That set the stage for a fourth down play with seven seconds remaining on the clock. Electing to go for it, Reid called Westbrook's number again and Seattle defensive tackle Rocky Bernard stopped him for no gain.

"We know we're capable of making things happen against good defenses," guard Shawn Andrews said. "It was a lot of what we did; it wasn't a lot of what they did. We just made mistakes and that put us back a few steps."

Early in the third quarter it was the Eagles forcing a mistake. On the second play of the third quarter, Sheldon Brown delivered a hit on Engram after a 7-yard catch and forced a fumble which Trent Cole recovered. Four plays later, Westbrook broke off a 29-yard touchdown run to give the Eagles a 24-21 lead.

That lead was short-lived though. Two possessions later, the Seahawks took the lead for good as Maurice Morris rattled off a 45-yard touchdown run.

Later in the third quarter Brown intercepted a Hasselbeck pass at Philadelphia's 22-yard line. Unfortunately, the Eagles gave the ball right back to Seattle on the ensuing possession when Feeley was intercepted by Julian Peterson.

Still the Eagles had a chance to win the game, thanks in very large part to Westbrook's 64-yard punt return, which set the offense up at Seattle's 14-yard line with 1:16 left in the fourth quarter. After two plays netted just 4 yards, Feeley looked to the end zone but was intercepted for a third time by Tatupu.

"It's the same play we scored on last week and the guy went for my eyes and just turned around and took Reggie. I didn't see him," Feeley said. "I thought the middle was wide open. I tried to bang it to him, and not until I released it did I see him standing right in front of me."

And like last week the game ended with the Eagles on the doorstep of victory.

"Mistakes happen," Andrews said. "When you're in this league and you make mistakes and the other team capitalizes on them, they usually come out on top."
