Red Zone Woes Continue

After a 16-9 victory over the Jets last Sunday, which saw the team unable to convert any of its four opportunities in the red zone, the Eagles again tried to breathe life into their red zone offense Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles were only able to capitalize on one of its four red zone opportunities and the Eagles lost 19-16 to the Bears.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb found veteran tight end Matt Schobel in the middle of the end zone for the Eagles only touchdown. The score put the Eagles up 16-12 with 4:57 left to play. The touchdown would not be enough, however, as Bears quarterback Brian Griese found wide receiver Muhsin Muhammed in the back of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown with only nine seconds left on the clock.

"It was tough-slash-scary-slash-disappointing," Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews said. "Knowing how hard we've worked during the week and how hard we worked during this game to fight and try to get ahead (and) stay ahead of these guys, and to give it away like that, is tough."

The Eagles offense could not find the end zone on their three other opportunities. Late in the first quarter and twice during the second quarter, the Eagles drove as far down as the Chicago 6-yard line, only to settle for three points courtesy of kicker David Akers each time. On those three drives combined, quarterback Donovan McNabb was 2-for-6 for 17 yards.

"We have to do better," head coach Andy Reid said. "When we have opportunities to catch the football and make throws and those types of things, we have to do them. We have to keep working as coaches on putting guys in better positions so that they can have success down there."

Running back Brian Westbrook had one carry for -3 yards.

"As an offense, our goal is to score touchdowns," running back Brian Westbrook said. "We haven't been able to do that the way we want to ...we can't keep relying on Dave (Akers) to kick field goals for us."

The Eagles have now converted 6-of-20 red zone opportunities this season. Schobel's touchdown was the first inside the 20-yard line since running back Tony Hunt's 1-yard score against Detroit in Week 3.

"It almost seems as if there is a wall that comes up when we get in the red zone," Andrews added. "We do so well in open field and we're executing plays left and right, running, passing. Everything is going, but when we get into the red zone it turns into the dead zone for us."

"It's haunting us right now," added running back Correll Buckhalter. "The coaches have been stressing it to us all week and guys on the offense know that we have a responsibility to score when we get it in the red zone. When we don't do that, it comes back to haunt us, like it did tonight."
