Entering 2007, it appeared as though Will James was primed to challenge Sheldon Brown for a starting spot at corner. Sixteen weeks later, Brown not only solidified his position, but also emerged as an outspoken leader of the Eagles' defense — in one moment of honesty, Brown said he could have been a "real jerk" about his uncertain status entering training camp.

Thankfully he wasn't, and instead, he used that perceived slight as fuel for a productive season.
Brown has always been overshadowed by the flashier Lito Sheppard, but with Sheppard banged up for much of the season, Brown showed that he is capable of being a premiere NFL corner.

On a defense that struggled to make game-changing plays, Brown was Philadelphia's biggest threat to create a turnover or come up with a big play.

Brown started the season off with a bang when he intercepted Brett Favre in the first week of the season and he never looked back. Seemingly every time the Eagles' proverbial backs were against the wall, Brown stepped up and made plays.

With Philadelphia desperate for a win in their Week 6 game against the Jets, Brown made a big interception when lined up against former Pro Bowl selection Laveranues Coles. He also made the play of the game when he extinguished a New York rally deep in Eagles territory.

With the Jets trailing by seven, they drove the ball to the Eagles' four looking to tie the game at 16. On fourth-and-1 from the four yard line, Chad Pennington threw the ball off of Coles' back shoulder in the left side of the endzone, but Brown's suffocating coverage caused the pass to fall incomplete. The play secured a victory that temporarily righted the ship for the Eagles after the ugly loss to the Giants the week before.

Later in the season, Brown also had a huge game against Seattle with the Eagles clawing to stay within striking distance of a playoff position. Philadelphia came up short, but it was certainly no fault of Brown, who made an acrobatic interception and forced a fumble when he drilled receiver Bobby Engram after a third quarter catch.

Brown has become known for his highlight-reel hits – most notably his demolition of the Saints' Reggie Bush in the 2006 playoffs – and he has leveraged his physical nature, steady play, and sense of the moment into a leadership role. After the season-ending victory over the Bills, Brown said he expects the Eagles to be a contender next, and even when Sheppard returns to health, there is no doubt that Brown will play a huge role in any potential renaissance.

Sheldon Brown is a good football player. He is durable, he is consistent on the field, he is physical and you know what you are going to get with Brown. I thought he had one of his finest seasons in 2007, despite a lack of big plays in general from the secondary. Brown really got off to a terrific start and then leveled out a bit, but he was still a good player from start to finish.

I know there are some people who think Brown would make a great safety and that the Eagles should look in that direction in the post-Brian Dawkins era, but why weaken the cornerback position in the process? Brown needs to continue to work hard in the off-season to maintain his conditioning and his speed, and he has to hope the Eagles can shake things up a bit at the line of scrimmage in 2008 so he can get his hands on a few more footballs.
