An Emotional Exit For Trotter

By: BOB KENT

Overcast and rainy skies provided the backdrop as Jeremiah Trotter exited the practice bubble Tuesday afternoon after addressing his teammates one final time.

"I just told them it was a privilege to play here," said a choked-up Trotter during a news conference, three hours after the Eagles announced his release. "Everyone gets to this point in their career at some point or another. Now it's my time. I'm just thankful that I spent this many years here in Philadelphia. I truly believe that if you were to cut me I'd bleed green. Even when I went away for those two years (in Washington) I was always an Eagle at heart, and I will always remain an Eagle."

Trotter is not certain what the future holds; that he leaves to prayer and discussions with close friends and family. What he leaves behind is a legacy that includes four Pro Bowls and so many memorable moments.

"No matter what happens from here on -- whether I go somewhere else  or retire -- I can honestly say that during my time here in Philadelphia I left it all on the field," Trotter said.

"Jeremiah is one of my favorite guys," said head coach Andy Reid. "There's no question that this is the toughest part of this job. He and I met about this last night and it was very emotional for both of us. Jeremiah and I have been together for many years and he's played a vital role in helping this team win a lot of football games. He developed himself into a Pro Bowl middle linebacker through a lot of hard work and desire. In my mind, he will always be a Philadelphia Eagle and I'm sure he feels the same way. I wish he and his family nothing but the best."

The 30-year old Trotter was in his second stint in Philadelphia since being a third round draft choice of the Eagles in 1998.  With four Pro Bowl selections on his resume, Trotter became just the fourth linebacker in team history to earn that distinction, joining Chuck Bednarik (8), Maxie Baughan (5), and Bill Bergey (4). He averaged over 147 tackles since becoming a full-time starter in 1999, including a career-high 202 in 1999. In 88 regular season starts as an Eagle, Trotter totaled 940 tackles (10.7 per game).

Trotter spent his first four seasons in Philadelphia and two in Washington before being released by the Redskins following the 2003 campaign. Without a contract offer, he somehow contacted Reid, who was on a fishing trip in a remote part of Utah where cell phone use was extremely limited. Trotter eventually signed a one-year contract at that time and parlayed it into a Pro Bowl season in 2004.

Trotter has been very successful off the field as well as he owns a real estate company, Jeremiah Trotter, Inc., and car wash facilities, Trott's Spot, while forming his own personal foundation, the Jeremiah Trotter Foundation, which is committed to the awareness and elimination of diabetes through research and education.

This is By far the most dumbest move i have ever seen a team do he was one of the best player on the team. He was a leader on defense and a great tackler and run stopper. Now that we lost him we have a really big gap to fill and i dont think that gaither is gonna be able to fill that gap we now have a weaker defense because of this takeo spikes cant do it all by himself at the linebacker position and two young man (gaither and gocong)are not going to be good enough. I mean when we lost barber i was ok with it because we still had a vetran trotter and soon i found out we also had another vetrean spikes. Now we only have spikes and he is new to the philly defense and trotter was a man who knew the desfense well. This is just a stupid move by the front office. What the front office should do now is to find any possible way to get back. i mean any reid has made the dumbest move in his life. trotter was a gerat linebacker i thought this year eagles fans would see a great linebacking duo (spikes and trotter) but because andy is so stupid we wont see that and once again we wont see the eagles go to the super bowl. GREAT JOB ANDY REID FOR MESSING UP THIS SEASON BEFORE IT DIDNT EVEN START!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Robojeff, Staley had 848 yds and then 148 yds after we released him. Trotter left us as a free agent, we didn't release him as you say. Please get your facts right if you're going to post. As far as the front office not wanting to win a superbowl. That is quite possibly the dumbest statement ever made on these posts. I won't even justify it by arguing against it.

Oh and to answer the question why eagles why? because they can, the waiting list for seasons tickets is 60,000 strong, even when we suck we sell out games this is a football city, and no matter how many horrible moves the eagles make that cost us chances at superbowls, they will still sellout. Noone in the Eagles Front Office gives a damn about A superbowl, they care about making money. And with the way so many people blindly support them, they could change their logo to a **** Sign, or a Klu Klux Klan member and still sell out every game.

By the way, for those of you who say Reid knows when players are past their prime: 1. Trotter was released, went to WASH, came back had another pro-bowl year. 2. Deuce Staley had 2 1000 yd. seasons after we released him. The truth is that Reid hasn't released many superstars who were passed their prime, he released some mediocre players like Emmons, the only pro bowler past him prime he released was Douglas.

Boy is it a sad sad day here in philly. When the Eagles front office gets so cutthroat as to cut our starting MLB, 4time pro bowler, and heart and soul of the philadelphia eagles jeremiah trotter in order to go in the direction of "younger faster legs". And to those who say that they trust in the Eagles Front Office judgement and they have a good trackrecord, how can you say that? We still don't have a lombardi trophy, and mcnabb still doesn't have a ring. I can't say this move surprises me though, after the way we got rid of Dante Stallworth b/c he wanted too much money, and then sign Kevin "WHO?" Curtis for even more money. Then after they make the move... the Eagles turn around and say "we want to go in a younger direction at linebacker" YEAH... the acquisition of Takeo Spikes really proves that point... The release of Trotter is not going to solve the Eagle’s defensive problems, all it does is give one of the best defensive players, and one of the hardest working, most passionate players to ever play in philly an unceremonious exit. This is not what Trotter deserves, and this is not what the fans deserve. Shame on the Eagles front office, and shame on the fans who support this. The atmosphere in the Linc, and in the Eagles Defense Huddle will never be the same again. Heres to you #54, the hardest working player ever to play in philly. 110%? No you gave 250% every down of every play.

I agree with framingchumproy, all of you so called fans need to do your jobs and let Reid do his. I made up my mind a few years back that I would no longer question this man when it came to football decisions and all of you should do the same. You really are showing your ignorance! I love Trot as much as all of you, but I understand that everyone's time passes them by. Just look at Reid's track record with letting veterans go. Emmons has done nothing in NY. Hollis Thomas nothing in New Orleans. Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, Hugh Douglas.....the list goes on and on. He knows when a guy has seen better days. We don't. All this really tells us is that the coaching staff has a lot of faith in Gaither and Bradley. How about us supporting a man who has done nothing but deliver us win after win and made us one of the top three franchises in the game? I, like all of you who posted before me and like Trot, bleed Eagle green. The only difference is that I have faith. For the first time in my 32 years I'm not waiting for the worst to happen. Have some faith.

Oh my goodness. I adore Jeremiah Trotter and I cannot believe that the Eagles would lay him off. I think that Andy Reid is a brilliant coach who has had a few shocks lately and he will remain a brilliant coach no matter what. As much as I think that this is a huge mistake, I will back Andy up. We will all miss Trotter very much. I love how he played 115% every game. If you read this, I bleed in green too, Jeremiah.

You people suck!!!!! You call yourself true eagles fans well you are not. They cut one player and all the sudden they are going to be the worst team in the league and have no shot at the super bowl. What about when they cut Emmons Staley Douglas they were losing then too. But they did'nt.They know wthat they are doing and you don't so shut up and just be a fan. Or better yet go be a fan of theraiders or some other team that blows.

Does Andy Reid have something against winning? Letting go of Trotter is probably the stupidest move yet. I am starting to believe that Fat a** Andy goes out of his way to make sure we never make to the Super Bowl again much less win. Great idea...give up Trotter who played his heart every time he hit the field. Hmm maybe its time for Andy to go. Then maybe we could have a shot at being a winning team. I'm so mad I would like to personally slap some sense into Andy Reid.

i want to know why. I know there won't be anything they could say that would possibly justify this. and its not that i don't like gaither but damn i had such high expectations seeing trott revitalized with the inclusion of TKO now its all gone and we are missing one hell of a leader

It's an end of an era. Another fan favorite player is cut loose. He left it all on the field. One of these years moves like this will bite the Eagles brass in the arse. But we move on,after 28 yrs of waiting for a SB ring,we move on.

Just make me sick. Unbelievable. I for one will be glad when Reid's tenure is over. Trot gave his all for this team, even though his suspension was all but gone. He was a leader and a class guy. Why today and like this. No excuse for the team management. He could have still contributed. There is no way that he willing walked away. Damn its just disgusting.

As a life long Eagles fan, I can say that I am stunned! I like Andy Reid, but sometimes I just don't get him. The Eagles have several issues which need to be addressed. Replacing Jeremiah Trotter is not one of them in my opinion. Jeremiah is a well respected player on and off the field. He gives 110% every play. He wants to win and is a natural leader.

i am very disappointed with the Eagles. I think this is very bad move and big loss. We had our pieces puzzled for the Superbowl and we just broke one piece now. Trotter was one of the main piece. TKO has a great relationship on/off the field. Now everything is changed. Now, other veterans will feel pressure on them. After seeing one of the great player being released. I hope Eagles still go forward n win all the way.
