Since making the team as an undrafted rookie free agent, wide receiver Greg Lewis has always done what the coaches have asked of him. That includes lining up on special teams, working in the slot as a third receiver and, at one point, even stepping in as a starting wideout.

While he struggled at the latter, Lewis has thrived as a situational receiver. Unfortunately, his opportunities have been limited as he has seen his reception total drop from 48 in 2005 to 24 in 2006 to 13 last season. Yet, Lewis made the most of his 13 catches in 2007, scoring three touchdowns and averaging 20.4 yards per catch.

Lewis caught just four balls for 68 yards over the first 10 games of the season. However, he resurfaced in a big way in the prime-time contest against the unbeaten Patriots. At New England, Lewis posted a career-high 88 receiving yards and registered the second multi-touchdown game of his career. He was a favorite target of quarterback A.J. Feeley, who got his first start of the season in place of an injured Donovan McNabb. In fact, all four of Feeley's completions to Lewis were successful third-down conversions.

Matched up against cornerback Eddie Jackson, Lewis burned Jackson and quarterback A.J. Feeley lofted the ball perfectly over the defensive back. Lewis jumped and turned around in the air to bring in the ball and just like that the game was tied at 14-14 with 12:50 left in the first half.

After the Patriots regained the lead with a 23-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal, the Eagles went right back down the field. When the Eagles got back in scoring position, Feeley again went to Lewis. This time, Lewis was lined up against Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel. Feeley connected with Lewis on a slant route from 18 yards out to give the Eagles a 21-17 lead, their first of the game. Of course, it wasn't enough as New England came back to win.

A forgotten player for much of the year, Lewis resurfaced in a big way that night and went on to add five more catches for 99 yards over the last four weeks of the season. Of Lewis' 6 career touchdown catches, three have come against the Patriots (including his TD catch in Super Bowl XXXIX).

As in past years, Lewis also earned his keep on special teams, although his NFL debut as a punt returner didn't quite go as he had hoped. Lewis' most forgettable moment of the season came in the season opener at Green Bay as he muffed a kick at his own 21-yard line and the special teams gaffe gave the Pack an early first-quarter lead. The ball eventually bounced into the Eagles end zone where Packers linebacker Tracy White fell on the loose ball for a touchdown.

For the season Lewis chipped in six tackles, 31 blocks and was the first man downfield in coverage a team-leading 27 times. That added up to 120 special teams production points.

Lewis has speed, good feet and excellent hands. Still, he's become somewhat of an enigma.

What's ahead for Lewis is nothing new. As he's done since 2003, he must fight for a roster spot.

Here is a guy who goes out and does things the right way at wide receiver. Lewis runs precise routes, has good hands and gets down the field and makes big plays. Lewis is a hard-working guy who took the long road to the NFL and has had to earn a roster spot every season.

That is likely to be the case this year. The Eagles could very well address wide receiver either in free agency or the draft and challenge the roster. Lewis knows he has to perform in the spring and summer to make it here and get more time on the field. I think he was underused in 2007 after a pretty productive 2006. Lewis has the foot quickness and the speed to give the Eagles good matchups, and I would like to see him more active in the passing game moving forward.
