Eagles Cheerleaders Tackle Global Warming with New Calendar
President Barack Obama and the other leaders of the G-8 nations set a goal of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent or more by 2050 at the recent G-8 conference. The Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders are also tackling global warming in their own creative way!
Known for being the first in professional sports to produce an eco-friendly calendar, the Eagles Cheerleaders just released the second installment of their environmentally themed calendar that focuses on climate change. Who could be better to draw attention to the earth's rising temperatures than the hottest eco-conscious cheerleaders in the NFL!
The 16-month 2009-10 eco-sexy calendar is printed on post-consumer FSC certified recycled paper and contains facts about the effects of global warming, including information on endangered species and changing weather patterns. It features all 38 beautiful cheerleaders wearing bikinis made from recycled plastic soda bottles, organic cotton, and tagua nuts from the Amazon Rainforest in Peru. The accessories are also comprised of renewable materials or recycled, up-cycled and repurposed products.
The highly anticipated unveiling event was held July 15th at Philadelphia's Prince Music Theater in front of a sold-out crowd. It included a high energy fashion show, followed by a dance performance, and a special performance by the six cheerleaders who recently returned from their goodwill military tour of Iraq and Kuwait. The culmination of the show was the surprise reveal of the new cover.
Devan, a second-year member of the squad, is featured on the cover wearing an organic cotton bikini, obsolete telephone wire bracelets and a necklace made from a repurposed appliance washer.
After hearing her name called, Devan said: "I'm honored to be on the cover! Through this calendar, we are educating people about global warming in a very distinctive fashion. It's an unconventional approach, but it certainly makes a statement and will spread the 'Go Green' message."
Eagles Cheerleading Director Barbara Zaun added: "Our calendar is a unique example of how you can creatively practice sustainability with a mainstream product."
Photographed in Aruba, the natural terrain of the dry desert, cacti, distinctive divi-divi trees and sand dunes, combined with deep turquoise seas and lush vegetation, was the ideal setting to produce the global warming message in the calendar.
The images were captured by renowned photographer Steve Vaccariello, named by Nikon as one of the top 50 photographers in the world.
The calendar is an initiative under the Eagles' nationally recognized "Go Green" program, which guides the team to lessen their impact on the environment. Through the implementation of an environmental strategy including recycling programs, renewable energy, tree-planting, and neutralizing carbon output, the Eagles have dramatically reduced their environmental footprint and impact on global warming by eliminating thousands of metric tons of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
